Storytelling has been regarded as a powerful communication tool central to our existence. In business and marketing, brands have used storytelling to provide deeper meaning to the brand and enhance connections consumers have with it. It also plays a huge role in shaping behaviour and altering consumer attitudes toward products and services.

Visiting craft markets

We wanted to first understand the kind of narratives that were being exchanged in craft markets. So we spoke to sellers, visited several craft marketplaces and observed the interactions and conversations exchanged within those spaces.

Craft marketplaces allow users to share their creations, interact and exchange information with others. They present a big opportunity for storytelling to happen which is absent in online craft market platforms.

Craft marketplaces are bursting with stories. But they aren’t the focus for buyers and sellers who sell and shop online. We realised that online, people tended to focus on more pragmatic aspects such as cost.
